How To: Shipping Perishable Foods Part Two

In one of our previous blogs we discussed the different types of cooling mechanisms, including the Herolily ice packs for shipping, that can be used for shipping perishable items like food. In today’s blog, we would like to continue that conversation by discussing the steps that should be taken before you ship the items.

Choosing Your Shipping Option

The first step in the perishable shipping process, much like for that of the non-perishables, is to choose your method of shipping. The one thing that must be considered when shipping a perishable item is the speed. If you are shipping an item across the country, or even across the state, services like next day air or next day ground transportation should be enlisted. The faster that you can ensure that the package is received, the less likely it is that the perishable good is to spoil.

Pack Protectively

Perishable goods can take on multiple different forms, with some of the more popular being in jars or watertight plastic containers, but regardless of how the food is packaged, its shipping container must protect it.  Ideally, a sturdy corrugated box should be used for packing the materials in. Additionally, to aid the shipping ice packs in preserving the food, the box should be lined with a polystyrene foam like styrofoam.

Choose The Right Day To Ship

Before you choose to ship your perishable items be sure to keep an eye on the weather. If you are shipping the items across the country, allow for a two day period of time where the weather is predicted to be cooler. In doing so, there is a better chance that the perishable goods will reach their intended location without spoiling. With cooler shipping conditions, there is a better chance that the frozen ice packs will stay frozen for the long journey.

Alert The Package Recipient

While it is likely that you would let someone know that you are sending them a package, it is extremely important to alert someone about the arrival of a packaged perishable item. Keep the recipient of the package up to date on the whereabouts of the package or send them the tracking number for the package so that they may do so themselves because after all, it would be a shame for a package to travel across the country only to spoil on the recipient’s front porch.
